Pool Sand Calculator
This pool sand calculator works out how much sand goes under an above-ground pool. Choose a round or oval pool, enter its size and the sand depth, and it adds the margin past the pool wall to give tons, cubic yards, bags and cost.
How Much Sand for an Above-Ground Pool?
Why Above-Ground Pools Need a Sand Base
The vinyl liner of an above-ground pool sits directly on the ground. A layer of sand gives it a smooth, soft surface free of stones and roots that could puncture the liner, and it lets you fine-tune the level so the water sits evenly against the wall. The sand is a cushion, not a leveller: the ground under it must already be dug level, because sand alone will shift over time.
How Deep Should Pool Sand Be?
Most pool manufacturers call for a sand base about 2 inches deep, and the pool sand calculator uses that by default. Use up to 3 inches where the ground needed more work, but no more — a thick sand layer moves under the weight of the water and the feet of swimmers, leaving footprints and ripples in the liner. Always check the installation manual for your pool, as some brands specify their own base.
Pool Sand by Pool Size
| Pool size | Sand area (6 in margin) | Cubic yards at 2 in | Tons of mason sand |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 ft round | 133 sq ft | 0.82 | 1.1 |
| 15 ft round | 201 sq ft | 1.24 | 1.6 |
| 18 ft round | 284 sq ft | 1.75 | 2.3 |
| 21 ft round | 380 sq ft | 2.35 | 3.1 |
| 24 ft round | 491 sq ft | 3.03 | 3.9 |
| 27 ft round | 616 sq ft | 3.80 | 4.9 |
| 30 ft round | 755 sq ft | 4.66 | 6.1 |
| 12 × 24 ft oval | 255 sq ft | 1.58 | 2.0 |
| 15 × 30 ft oval | 390 sq ft | 2.40 | 3.1 |
| 18 × 33 ft oval | 507 sq ft | 3.13 | 4.1 |
Add 10 percent when ordering. Bulk sand is the sensible choice: a 24 ft pool needs about 175 bags of 50 lb sand.
Best Sand for an Above-Ground Pool
- Mason sand — fine, washed and free of stones. The most common pool sand because it feels smooth under the liner.
- Concrete sand — coarser and slightly firmer; acceptable if screened free of sharp stones.
- Fill sand — cheap, but may contain stones, roots and clay; screen it before using it under a liner.
- Stone dust — packs hard and resists footprints, but can be gritty against the liner. Some installers use it under a layer of sand or a foam pad.
Many installers also lay a foam or felt pool pad over the sand for extra protection.
How the Pool Sand Calculator Works
1. Pool sand area
For a round pool the area is π × radius², with the radius increased by the sand margin past the wall. A 24 ft pool with 6 inches of extra sand has a 12.5 ft radius: 3.1416 × 12.5² = 491 sq ft. For an oval pool, the calculator uses π ÷ 4 × length × width.
2. Volume of pool sand
Multiply by the depth in feet: 491 × 2/12 = 81.8 cubic feet, divided by 27 = 3.03 cubic yards.
3. Tons of pool sand
Multiply by the sand weight: 3.03 × 1.30 = 3.9 tons of mason sand, or about 4.3 tons with 10 percent extra.
Pool Cove and Pool Filter Sand
Sand cove
Most liners need a cove: a sloped bank of sand or a foam cove about 6 inches high and 6 inches out around the inside of the wall, so the liner does not pull under the bottom track. A 6 × 6 inch sand cove around a 24 ft pool takes about 9 cubic feet, or 0.35 cubic yards — add it to the pool sand total, or buy pre-formed foam cove instead.
Pool filter sand is different
Sand for a pool filter is not base sand. Filters use graded silica filter sand, usually #20 grade, sold in 50 lb bags. The amount is fixed by the filter, not the pool: check the label on the filter tank, where typical residential sand filters take 100 to 350 lbs.

Pool Sand FAQ
How much sand do I need for a 24 ft above-ground pool?
A 24 ft round pool with a 2 inch sand base extending 6 inches past the wall needs about 3 cubic yards of sand, which is roughly 3.9 tons of mason sand, or about 4.3 tons with 10 percent extra.
How deep should sand be under an above-ground pool?
About 2 inches. Use no more than 3 inches, because a thicker sand layer shifts under the water and leaves footprints in the liner.
What kind of sand goes under an above-ground pool?
Fine, washed mason sand is the most common choice because it is smooth and free of stones. Screened concrete sand also works; fill sand should be screened for stones and roots first.
How much sand do I need for a 15x30 oval pool?
A 15 by 30 ft oval pool with a 2 inch base and 6 inches of extra sand around the wall needs about 2.4 cubic yards, or roughly 3.1 tons of mason sand before waste.
How many bags of sand do I need for a pool base?
About 54 bags of 50 lb sand per cubic yard. Even an 18 ft round pool needs close to 100 bags, so bulk sand by the ton is usually cheaper and easier.
