Arena sand calculator chart of tons of footing sand needed 3 inches deep for a 60 ft round pen, 60x120 arena, small and large dressage arenas, 70x150 and 100x200 ft arenas
Tons of washed concrete sand for 3 inches of footing, before waste. Every extra inch of depth adds a third.

Arena Sand Depth

Footing depth is the setting that matters most in an arena sand calculator, and more is not better. Sand that is too deep makes horses work harder with every stride and strains tendons and ligaments; too shallow and it offers no cushion over the base.

UseFooting sand depth
Dressage and flatwork2–3 in
Jumping3–4 in
Western, reining and cutting3–5 in
Round pen and lunging2–3 in
Annual top-upabout 1 in

Start at the shallow end of the range: it is easy to add more arena sand and expensive to take it away. Many arena builders lay 2 inches first, ride on it for a few weeks, and top up from there.

Choosing Arena Sand

Angular vs rounded

Angular sand grains interlock and give a firmer, more stable footing; rounded sand rolls under hoof like ball bearings and feels deep and loose. Most arena sand is a washed, medium-to-coarse, sub-angular sand such as concrete sand or a manufactured arena sand.

Washed and low in fines

Silt and clay make arena sand dusty when dry and slick when wet. Ask for washed sand with very little fine material, and ask the supplier for a sample to rub between your fingers — it should feel gritty, not powdery.

Hard sand vs soft sand

Hard quartz and silica sands last for years; softer sands break down under hooves into dust and need replacing sooner. Fine masonry sand rides softly but tends to get deep and dusty, so it is better as a blend component than on its own.

Arena Base Under the Sand

Arena sand is only the top layer. Below it you need a compacted base — typically 4 to 6 inches of stone dust or crusher run graded with a slight slope for drainage — on a firm, well-drained sub-base. The sand should never mix into the base; if it does, the footing turns muddy and uneven. Work out the base with the gravel base calculator.

How the Arena Sand Calculator Works

The calculator multiplies the arena length by width, or π × radius² for a round pen, then by the footing depth in feet, and divides by 27 for cubic yards. A 60 × 120 ft arena at 3 inches is 7,200 × 0.25 = 1,800 cubic feet, or 66.7 cubic yards. At 1.35 tons per cubic yard that is 90 tons, or 99 tons with 10 percent extra — about seven 15-ton truckloads.

Arena Sand Cost

Washed arena sand typically costs $25 to $60 per ton, with specialty silica footing sands well above that, and freight often adds as much again. For a 60 × 120 ft arena, 99 tons at $30 is about $3,000, plus seven loads at $150 for roughly $4,000 delivered. Sourcing from the nearest quarry with suitable sand is the biggest saving.

Arena Sand FAQ

How much sand do I need for a horse arena?

A 60 by 120 ft arena with 3 inches of footing sand needs about 67 cubic yards, or 90 tons of washed concrete sand, and about 99 tons with 10 percent extra. At 4 inches it needs about 120 tons.

How deep should sand be in a riding arena?

Two to three inches for dressage and flatwork, three to four inches for jumping, and three to five inches for western disciplines. Start shallow and add more after riding on it.

What is the best sand for a horse arena?

Washed, medium-to-coarse, sub-angular sand with very few fines, such as washed concrete sand or a manufactured arena sand. Hard quartz or silica sands last longest.

How many tons of sand are in a truckload?

A tandem dump truck carries about 13 to 15 tons of sand, a tri-axle 15 to 18 tons, and a tractor-trailer 20 to 25 tons, so a 99 ton arena order is about seven 15-ton loads.

How much sand do I need for a round pen?

A 60 ft round pen with 3 inches of sand needs about 26 cubic yards, or roughly 35 tons of washed sand before waste.
